We love Timber – Top 3

Some say timber is stronger than concrete

Whether or not that is the case, timber is slowly becoming the building material of choice that has the potential to transform the way architects and engineers think during construction. We’re a big fan of timber – its sustainability and of course how it sits perfectly in between our joist hangers!

Anyway, here’s our top 3 recent timber constructions we’re fans of!

Seven types of timber

Nestled on the shoreline of a small lake in Tenala, Finland, this gabled house impressively uses seven different types of timber that were sourced locally to the project that is approximately 60 miles west of the capital, Helsinki. Not only are we a big fan of the use of timber but also its rural setting that appears very tranquil and the goals of the project being authenticity, simplicity, locality and sustainability.

The Smile

An experimental building that is part pavilion, part sculpture has recently been on display at the Chelsea College of Art and Design as part of the London Design Festival. Entitled ‘The Smile’, it has been constructed to showcase the immense possibilities and structural strength that timber can provide. We were certainly smiling when we saw it!

The Watchers

Inspired by Owls, these cabins near the city of Bordeaux in the South of France provide alternative destination for a short break. Part of a campsite of beautiful timber structures, The Watchers is free to stay in but books up fast! Without amenities such as heating and electricity, it takes you closer to nature.
